Why PDF Pages End Up Sideways

Document scanners feed pages through a mechanism that does not always detect whether a sheet was inserted in portrait or landscape orientation. A legal-size document scanned on a letter-size feeder, for example, often comes out rotated 90 degrees. Phone scanning apps use the accelerometer to guess orientation but frequently get it wrong, especially when the phone is held at an angle.

Another common culprit is combining PDFs from different sources. When you merge a landscape spreadsheet with portrait text pages, the merged file inherits whatever rotation each source had. The result is a document that flips between orientations as you scroll through it.

How to Rotate PDF Pages

Does Rotation Affect Quality?

Rotating a PDF page does not re-encode or rasterize the content. The PDF format stores a rotation value in the page dictionary — a simple integer flag — and the viewer applies it when rendering. Text remains vector text, images remain at their original resolution, and the file size stays virtually unchanged.

This is different from rotating an image file like JPEG, where rotation can trigger re-compression and quality loss. PDF rotation is purely a metadata change, making it completely lossless.
